Brewers 4, Cardinals 3
Prince Fielder capped a four-run rally with his 19th home run as the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, prevailing 4-3 Sunday to move into first place in the National League Central.
Shaun Marcum (7-2) pitched seven strong innings for the Brewers, who improved to 25-9 at home and moved one-half game in front of the Cardinals.
Milwaukee has been on a tear over the last month, posting a 22-7 record since May 11.
It looked as though the Cardinals would avoid the sweep when they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. But Jake Westbrook (6-4), who had not made it through six innings in any of his previous three starts, broke down in the sixth again.
The veteran sinkerballer gave up RBI hits to Mark Kotsay and Ryan Braun in front of Fielder, who belted the first pitch deep into the stands in right to give the Brewers the lead. Fielder has homered eight times in the last 10 games.
Marcum allowed five hits while striking out eight to snap a three-start winless streak.
John Axford worked the ninth for his 18th save.
