Kyle Lohse pitched six shutout innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.
Jon Jay and Matt Holliday homered in the third inning for St. Louis, which trails Atlanta by 7 1/2 games in the National League wild card standings and Milwaukee by 9 1/2 in the NL Central.
Lohse (13-8) allowed four hits, three walks and struck out six while winning for the fifth time in six decisions.
Prince Fielder had a run-scoring single in the ninth for Milwaukee before Jason Motte retired Casey McGehee on a double-play grounder for his third save.
St. Louis' Lance Berkman had a run-scoring single in the first and Jay added a run-scoring single in the seventh to boost the Cardinals' lead to 4-0.
Jonathan Lucroy’s eighth-inning double plated Milwaukee’s first run.
Yovani Gallardo (15-10) gave up three runs and four hits in six innings while dropping to 1-7 in 11 career starts against St. Louis.
