Cardinals 2, Brewers 0

Chris Carpenter won a battle of former Cy Young Award winners by pitching a four-hitter and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 on Wednesday.

Carpenter (9-9), who won the National League Cy Young in 2005, needed only 97 pitches to record his third complete game of the season. It was Carpenter’s first shutout since throwing a one-hitter against Milwaukee exactly two years ago.

The righthander outdueled 2009 AL Cy Young winner Zack Greinke (14-6) for his first win since Aug. 11.

Milwaukee is a major league-best 41-16 since July 6, but seven of those losses have come to the Cardinals, who moved to within 6 1/2 games of Atlanta in the National League wild card standings.

St. Louis, however, is all but out of the NL Central race. They are 8½ games behind the Brewers, who are poised to win their first division title since taking the AL East in 1982.

St. Louis tied a major league record when Albert Pujols hit into the Cardinals’ 152nd double play of the season.

Brewers' third baseman Casey McGehee was ejected in the fourth for arguing balls and strikes.
