Justin Upton hit two solo home runs and Ian Kennedy won his fourth straight start to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-3 victory over the host San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.
Kennedy (12-3) gained a share of the National League wins lead after he allowed two runs on four hits and struck out nine as Arizona won its fourth straight and remained three games behind first-place San Francisco in the National League West.
Closer J.J. Putz worked a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save and first since landing on the disabled list June 29.
Xavier Nady blasted a two-run homer off Cory Luebke (3-5) in the seventh to give Arizona a 4-2 lead. Luebke allowed four runs and struck out six in six innings.
Upton, who hit his 19th and 20th home runs, is 17-for-30 with five doubles, five homers and 15 RBIs in his last eight games.
Padres catcher Luis Martinez cut into Arizona’s lead in the seventh with his first major league hit, a solo home run to left field off Bryan Shaw.
