Mike Aviles homered and had four RBIs and Luke Hochevar pitched into the seventh inning as the Kansas City Royals finished off a three-game sweep of the visiting Minnesota Twins with a 10-3 victory Sunday.
Aviles had three of Kansas City’s 15 hits and Jeff Francoeur also homered as the Royals handed Minnesota its sixth straight loss.
Aviles hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning off Dusty Hughes as Kansas City scored in double digits for the second straight contest.
Hochevar (3-3) gave up three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings while winning for the first time since April 15.
Francoeur’s homer staked Kansas City to a 1-0 lead in the second inning and the Royals pulled away by scoring five runs over the fifth and sixth innings.
Alex Gordon’s sacrifice fly, Billy Butler’s run-scoring double and Wilson Betemit’s RBI single gave the Royals a 5-1 lead in the fifth.
Justin Morneau homered in the sixth for the Twins before Mitch Maier tripled in a run and scored on a single by Aviles in the bottom of the inning.
Alexi Casilla went 2-for-3 with two triples for the Twins, who have the worst record in the majors at 9-18.
Minnesota starter Carl Pavano (2-3) gave up seven runs – six earned – and 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
