Bruce Chen allowed two hits in eight scoreless innings to carry the Kansas City Royals to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.
Alex Gordon went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs as the Royals won their third straight and moved three games ahead of the last-place Twins in the American League Central.
Rookie Mike Moustakas also homered - his first since June 11 - as Kansas City sent spiraling Minnesota to its fourth consecutive defeat.
Chen (11-7) retired the last 12 batters he faced to beat the Twins for only the second time in his career. He was 1-4 with a 6.59 ERA in 15 previous appearances (five starts) against them.
Gordon, who homered in the third and singled in a run in the fourth, is 8-for-19 with six RBIs in his last four games.
Twins starter Carl Pavano (8-12) was charged with four runs on 11 hits in seven innings.
