Rockies 5, Giants 3

Carlos Gonzalez’s two-run single in the eighth inning lifted the Colorado Rockies to a 5-3 victory over the visiting San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.

Dexter Fowler added an RBI double during the four-run rally in the eighth and Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo homer for Colorado, which swept the two-game series to move back into first place in the National League West.

Jonathan Sanchez (3-3) started for the Giants and cruised through the first seven innings on 80 pitches. But after surrendering back-to-back singles to lead off the eighth, Sanchez’s own throwing error pushed a run across and ended his day.

Javier Lopez came on in relief and allowed Fowler’s ground-rule double to deep right to knot it at 3-3. Lopez got Jonathan Herrera to ground out for the first out but could not retire Gonzalez, who laced a single to right to plate the go-ahead runs.

Ubaldo Jimenez once again failed to earn his first win but did go deeper into the game than ever this season, lasting seven innings while surrendering three runs and eight hits. The Dominican righthander struck out seven and matched a season-low with one walk.

Matt Belisle (4-2) picked up the win and Huston Street worked the ninth for his 14th save.
