Angels 4, Mariners 3
Mark Trumbo hit a booming home run to center field leading off the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 4-3 victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners on Friday night.
Trumbo’s blast off David Pauley (5-2) was the Angels’ fourth solo homer of the game. Erick Akbar hit a leadoff homer in the first, Vernon Wells connected in the fourth and Hank Conger hit a game-tying shot in the seventh against reliever Jamey Wright.
Jordan Walden (2-2) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Angels.
Seattle scored its runs in small-ball fashion on Ichiro Suzuki’s third-inning groundout, and sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth innings by Justin Smoak and Brendan Ryan, respectively.
Seattle’s Blake Beavan gave up two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Ervin Santana allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings for Los Angeles.
Highly touted Mike Trout made his major-league debut for the Angels. The center fielder went 0-for-3 and robbed Franklin Gutierrez of extra bases with a running catch in the ninth.
