Mariners 2, Angels 1
Mike Carp hit a two-run double in the eighth inning, and Felix Hernandez pitched a complete game and struck out nine as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Wednesday.
Carp laced his game-deciding, two-out double against reliever Scott Downs off the base of the wall in left-center field as Seattle beat the Angels for the second time in three nights.
Hernandez (13-11) pitched a five-hitter and walked one as the Mariners won for only the fifth time in 15 games while keeping Los Angeles 3 1/2 games behind Texas in the American League West. Hernandez retired Mark Trumbo on a deep fly to right for the final out.
Dan Haren (13-8) was the hard-luck loser. He gave up five hits in 7 2/3 innings and was replaced by Downs after allowing back-to-back singles to Franklin Gutierrez and Dustin Ackley in the eighth. Both runners scored easily on Carp’s double.
Howie Kendrick had an RBI single in the third for Los Angeles.
Hernandez improved to 5-9 lifetime against the Angels and also topped the 200-strikeout mark for the third straight season. He has 204.
