Angels 3, Mariners 1
Maicer Izturis blasted a decisive two-run double to help the Los Angeles Angels pick up a game on the Texas Rangers with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
The Angels were blanked by Seattle lefthander Charlie Furbush for seven innings before Izturis lined a shot deep into the left-center field cap with one out in the eighth as Los Angeles whittled Texas’ lead in the American League West to 2 1/2 games.
Peter Bourjos added a run-scoring single later in the eighth for Los Angeles, which won for the fifth time in seven games.
Jerome Williams (3-0) allowed one hit in eight innings, a homer by Seattle’s Trayvon Robinson over the low fence in right field leading off the sixth. Williams struck out five and walked one.
Jordan Walden pitched the ninth for his 29th save.
Furbush (3-8) allowed three runs on five hits in a career-long 7 1/3 innings. Furbush retired 12 batters in a row after allowing a third-inning double to Izturis but faded in the eighth when he allowed an infield hit to Erick Aybar and walked Alberto Callaspo before giving up the go-ahead double to Izturis.
