Giants 2, Padres 1
Barry Zito won his third straight outing since missing more than two months with a foot sprain as the host San Francisco Giants edged the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Thursday to split their four-game series.
Zito (3-1) pitched eight brilliant innings, striking out seven, walking none and allowing four hits, and broke his personal six-game losing streak to San Diego. Brian Wilson worked around a leadoff hit in the ninth to earn his 25th save.
Eli Whiteside gave the Giants a 1-0 lead with a third-inning homer. It was 2-0 in the seventh when San Diego’s Ryan Ludwick cut the deficit in half with his 11th homer.
Lefty Cory Luebke (2-3) was the hard-luck loser, allowing two runs over six innings.
Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval extended his hitting streak to 18 games. He is 11-for-25 with six RBIs against San Diego this year.
Giants second baseman Bill Hall left the game in the sixth with a left leg laceration.
