White Sox 4, Twins 0
Rookie Zach Stewart pitched seven perfect innings and finished with a one-hitter as the Chicago White Sox completed a doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 win over the host Minnesota Twins on Monday night.
Danny Valencia led off the eighth inning by lining a double to right field on a 1-1 pitch to break up the 24-year-old righthander's bid for history.
Stewart (2-3) struck out nine and didn't walk a batter in an abrupt turnaround from his start against the Twins on Aug. 30 at U.S. Cellular Field, when he gave up six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Acquired from Toronto in July, Stewart was making his 10th major league appearance and eighth start.
He faced only 28 batters – one over the minimum – after entering the game with a 5.86 ERA and a .331 batting average against.
Third baseman Brent Morel made the game's best defensive play in the fourth. He dove to his left to grab Trevor Plouffe's ground ball, got to his feet and made a strong throw to first.
Twins starter Scott Diamond (1-3) allowed two runs in five innings. Juan Pierre's RBI single in the second gave Chicago the lead before Alexei Ramirez added a run-scoring single in the fifth.
Chicago added two in the seventh on Morel’s two-run single. Morel, Ramirez and Alex Rios had three hits apiece.
