Angels 3, Rangers 2

Dan Haren turned in a solid start, Alberto Callaspo had two run-scoring doubles and the Los Angeles Angels remained atop the American League West with a 3-2 victory over the host Texas Rangers on Saturday.

After the Rangers tied the game 2-2 in the eighth, the Angels rallied for the go-ahead run in the ninth when Jeff Mathis led off with a single, moved to second on Peter Bourjos’ sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out single by Maicer Izturis.

Scott Downs (1-0) got one out in the eighth and Jordan Walden pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save, but the star of the game was Haren, who had his longest start since a complete game April 12. He went 7 2/3 innings Saturday, allowed two runs, six hits and struck out five.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the second on Adrian Beltre’s RBI single before the Angels tied it on a double by Callaspo in the fourth. In the sixth, Callaspo's RBI double gave the Angels a 2-1 lead.

Texas answered with a run in the eighth. Angels shortstop Erick Aybar couldn’t come up with a hard grounder by Michael Young, which allowed Ian Kinsler to score. Young was awarded a hit on the play.

Texas starter Derek Holland went six innings, allowed two runs, six hits, three walks and struck out four. Reliever Darren Oliver (1-4) allowed a run on two hits in the ninth.
